Follow these Quick Tips for Decreasing Your Risk of a Car Wreck

First Class Auto Body & BumperDoc • 17 October 2023

In some cases, reckless drivers make accidents unavoidable for those who are driving defensively. Still, it’s always worth taking some basic precautions that reduce your risk of being involved in an accident. But if you did get in a wreck, it’s very important that the repairs are done at a highly-rated body shop that knows exactly how to restore your vehicle to its pre-accident condition so that it is once again safely drivable. At First Class Auto Body & BumperDoc, we provide expert collision repair in the greater Scottsdale, AZ area.

Basic Ways to Prevent Car Accidents

A clear field of vision through your windshield is crucial to being able to safely see any roadway hazards that are looming ahead. This makes it very important that windshield cracks, chips, and scratches are fixed. Also, on a weekly basis, you’ll want to wipe down the inside and outside of your windshield so that dirt/dust isn’t making it harder for you to see the road. Another way to optimize visibility is to buy a good pair of polarized sunglasses for times when glare is making it hard to see.

You can greatly reduce your accident risk by avoiding distractions while behind the wheel. Smartphone use has made distracted driving the top cause of car wrecks in the nation. It’s very important to hang up and drive and keep both hands on the wheel as you navigate. Along with smartphone use, there are other distractions, such as eating and makeup application, that should also be avoided.

For optimal safety and accident prevention, it’s critical that your brakes are kept in great shape and that you maintain a safe following distance. You should always maintain at least a three-second following distance. If the weather is poor, this should be significantly lengthened.  And if you notice a sign of brake trouble, you should address it ASAP. Signs of brake failure include squealing, veering, grinding, a soft brake pedal, and the ABS warning light coming on. Brake maintenance—such as getting pad replacement and fluid exchanges as necessary—is also important. Healthy brakes and a safe following distance will make it much less likely that you end up skidding into the car in front of you.
